What Bing Webmaster Tools Revealed About AI Search
— Why Bing Traffic Was 3x Higher Than Google on My Site

Bing was sending three times more traffic to my site than Google. I discovered this only after registering my site with Bing Webmaster Tools and comparing the data against Google Search Console.
Bing Webmaster Tools is a free site management tool from Microsoft. It shows how your site appears in Bing search results and, more importantly, how it's cited by Copilot's AI-generated responses. It offers functionality comparable to Google Search Console, plus an "AI Performance" feature that tracks Copilot citations — something Search Console doesn't provide at the same level of detail.
I registered my site and compared data from both tools over the same three-month period. The results were unexpected. Google sent 35 clicks; Bing sent 94. Bing was delivering roughly three times more actual visitors. Impressions told a different story — Google showed 3,460 and Bing showed 885 — so by raw impression count, Google appeared dominant. But the people who actually arrived at my site came overwhelmingly from Bing.
This is a small personal site with around 100 articles, hosted on GitHub Pages. Large media outlets or major e-commerce sites may see different results. But at least for my site, the assumption that "Google is the only search engine that matters" was already wrong. This article examines why this happened and what Bing's index means now that AI search is mainstream.

Bing Sent 94 Clicks, Google Sent 35 — What Was Happening on My Site
Here are the numbers. The following is a side-by-side comparison of Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools data for the same three-month period.

By impressions, Google is roughly four times higher. But by clicks — the number of people who actually visited the site — Bing is 2.7 times higher. The CTR difference is more than tenfold.
"More impressions = more people seeing my content" is an easy assumption to make, but it's wrong. Search Console's impression count includes a large number of displays that never actually reached a user's eyes. The next section explains why.
Why Search Console Impression Numbers Are Misleading
Search Console counts an impression every time a page appears in search results — even at position 42 or position 92.
Position 42 is page five of Google's search results. Position 92 is page ten. Virtually nobody browses past page two. Pages five and ten might as well not exist.
In my Search Console data, queries like these appeared:
- "seoイノベーション 低価格500円 seo対策" (a Japanese SEO query) — position 42, 442 impressions, 0 clicks
- "seo 外注" (SEO outsourcing) — position 88, 75 impressions, 0 clicks
- "スマホで証明写真" (ID photo on smartphone) — position 92, 26 impressions, 0 clicks
These three queries alone accounted for 543 impressions — about 16% of the total 3,460 — all from positions where no human would ever see them.
Bing, by contrast, tends not to display pages for loosely relevant queries. Its impression count is lower, but the click-through rate on displayed results is much higher. Bing's 885 impressions are closer to the actual number of times a real user saw my site in search results.
When comparing search engine contribution, use clicks, not impressions. Impression count is just the number of times Google's algorithm listed your page as a candidate — it says nothing about whether anyone saw it.
Being in Bing's Index Means Exposure Across Copilot, ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, and DuckDuckGo
Bing's index doesn't only serve Bing.com. It functions as the information source for Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, and DuckDuckGo. Being properly indexed by Bing means potential exposure across all of these AI search services.
"Bing has fewer users than Google — why should I care?" is a reasonable question. Bing's standalone global search share is roughly 5–10%, compared to Google's approximately 89%.
But Bing's index — its searchable database of the web — is not used by Bing.com alone.
Only two companies in the world have built and maintain their own web-scale search indexes: Google and Microsoft (Bing). Building such an index from scratch requires massive technical capability and infrastructure investment. It's not realistic for other search services or AI products to create their own. As a result, most AI search services outside Google's ecosystem rely on Bing's index as their backend.
Microsoft Copilot retrieves information from Bing's index through Microsoft's "Prometheus model" to generate responses.

Bing's standalone search share may be small, but when you consider the entire AI search ecosystem it supports, the value of being properly indexed by Bing is far greater than the Bing.com traffic numbers alone suggest.
Japan's Desktop Search: Bing Overtook Google — StatCounter Data
StatCounter's May 2026 data shows that in Japan's desktop search market, Bing reached 48.74% share while Google fell to 45.96%. Globally, Bing hovers around 10%, making Japan's desktop market a striking outlier.

Why is Japan such an outlier? The likely explanation lies in Japan's corporate IT culture and Microsoft 365 adoption.
Japan's large enterprises and government agencies overwhelmingly standardize on Windows PCs, Edge browser, and Microsoft 365 as their workplace environment. Edge's default search engine is Bing, so every search from Edge counts as Bing traffic.
More critically, corporate policies around generative AI play a role. Surveys from 2025–2026 indicate that approximately 72% of Japanese companies either prohibit or are considering prohibiting the use of public generative AI tools (including personal ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude accounts) for work purposes.

This directly translates to search traffic. Copilot's backend is Bing, and all Copilot-initiated searches count as Bing traffic. The more employees in Microsoft 365 organizations use Copilot daily, the more Japan's desktop Bing search share gets pushed up.
A caveat: StatCounter's measurement is heavily influenced by default browser search engine settings. One survey found that approximately 34% of Bing users "are not aware they are using Bing" — they're searching through the Windows taskbar or Edge address bar without conscious choice. Additionally, Edge's prerendering feature (pre-loading the next page) and Copilot's background network communications may inflate Bing's share with pageviews that don't represent actual user behavior, as acknowledged in StatCounter's official FAQ. These numbers don't precisely measure "intentional Bing usage." However, whether the search is intentional or not, the user's query flows through Bing's index and feeds into the AI ecosystem.
Tracking Copilot Citations with Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance
Bing Webmaster Tools' "AI Performance" is currently the only tool that quantitatively shows how many times your site has been cited in Copilot's AI-generated responses. Added as a public preview in February 2026, it provides two metrics: citation count (Citations) and the search queries AI used to retrieve information (Grounding Queries).

The top two are both glossary entries, totaling 602 citations — 68% of the overall 878. Definition and explanation-style content like glossary pages tends to be cited frequently by AI as "grounding" (factual backing) for its responses. Notably, English queries ("top image recoloring services" — 17 citations, "best photo recoloring apps" — 17 citations) also cited my Japanese-language site.
Google Search Console added an AI report in June 2026, but it only shows impression counts — click data, CTR, and query data remain unavailable. Setting Up Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow
For those who've read this far and want to check their own site, here are three things to do. All free, and setup takes less than a day.
1. Register Your Site with Bing Webmaster Tools
- Go to Bing Webmaster Tools and sign in with a Microsoft account
- Add your site URL
- Verify ownership (adding a meta tag to your HTML head is the easiest method)
- Once registered, check clicks and impressions under "Search Performance" in the left menu
- Check Copilot citation data under "AI Performance" in the same menu
If you've registered with Google Search Console before, the process is nearly identical.
2. Set Up IndexNow
IndexNow is a protocol that instantly notifies Bing and Yandex when you publish or update a page. Since Bing's index is the backend for Copilot and ChatGPT Search, faster Bing indexing means faster AI search exposure.
- Generate an IndexNow API key (a random string)
- Place the key as a text file at your site's root (e.g., https://example.com/abc123.txt)
- Send an HTTP POST request to the IndexNow API whenever you update a page
WordPress users can automate this with a plugin. Static sites can use a shell script or Python script. IndexNow does not support Google — for Google, continue using Search Console's URL Inspection tool for individual requests.
3. Compare Search Console and Bing Click Counts for Your Own Site
The numbers in this article are from my site and will vary by site size and niche. How much Bing is contributing to your traffic is something you need to check yourself.
Summary
If you only look at Google Search Console to assess search traffic, you're missing Bing-sourced visits. On my site, Bing clicks were roughly three times higher than Google's.
